As children, we’ve always dreamed of our future job, with the question “What do I want to be when I grow up?” circulating our minds. Our first dreams are usually a movie star or maybe a superhero. But, as we grow up, our dreams change, either because we have changed or because the world is forcing us to. However, my dream has always been to be a hairstylist. The Beauty Industry is among the few industries that can make someone look and feel like a movie star or make a woman feel like a beauty icon. Personally, I think that is pretty awesome!

After over 30 years in the beauty industry, I’ve come to realize that people need to be educated, not only about their hair and what products they should use, but also about the industry itself. People need to understand the services of a salon. Surprise! It isn’t just about hair cutting, coloring, and manicures while drinking coffee and talking about the newest celebrity couples. In fact, the beauty industry is always changing, evolving, and improving. There is always something new to learn a new cutting technique, a new trend to follow, or a better way to retain your customers.

Education is the key to success in this special industry. On a daily basis, stylists deal with the science of hair and the chemistry of hair colors, how to manage their customers, their budget, time, and retail, all at the same time.

Being a hairstylist is more than just the skills of giving good hairstyles. It is about making personal connections with your clients, helping them understand their beauty, and celebrating life achievements. It’s about helping the ladies, sitting in your salon chair, to find their beauty whether inside or outside. It’s an industry that helps you grow as a person and as an artist as well. With hard work, sweat, and tears, one strives to become a thriving business professional.
